Why Delrin as the material for the G1 X filter adapter?
The reason that we use Delrin for the Lensmate G1 X filter adapter is because of it’s excellent machining qualities, its inherently low coefficient of friction (commonly used as a bearing material), and the flexibility required for the locking mechanism to work.
The design of this filter adapter relies on the flexibility of the material for the locking mechanism to work, as well as avoiding wear to the camera. You can observe this by attaching the filter adapter alone to the camera – from the start position, two opposing lobes climb the cams on either side of the lens, then lock when the lobes are past the cams.
Avoid metal filter adapters on these types of bayonet mounts (the SX series and G1 X) as they can wear away the plastic quickly.
What’s the difference between the Lensmate G1 X Filter Adapter and the Canon adapter?
The Lensmate G1 X adapter is machined from Delrin. The Canon adapter is molded of ABS plastic. They are functionally similar, but it’s widely reported that the thread of the Canon part can easily bind to the filter, even when attached loosely, resulting in a stuck filter.
We’ve found that unless overtightened, you can thread/unthread a filter with the Lensmate filter adapter as you normally would with your fingertips.
